COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
PAD, MAGNETIC, SURGICAL INSTRUMENT
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers one type of flexible rubber instrument pad with embedded magnets, suitable for holding steel alloy surgical instruments.
Salient characteristics:
Shall be a flexible pad with embedded magnets designed to hold steel and steel alloy surgical instruments. The pad shall consist of 4 grommets, 54 rectangular magnets, and 2 flexible sheets.
Materials. The components of the pad shall be fabricated from the following materials the flexible sheets shall be fabricated from natural rubber; the magnets shall be fabricated from any suitable material exhibiting magnetic properties; the grommets shall be fabricated from a suitable corrosion-resisting steel, properly hardened and passivated.
Construction. The magnets shall be arrayed in a square matrix with two rubber sheets molded over the magnets to secure them into a pad configuration. The pads shall possess permanently secured grommets at each corner.
Dimension. The pad shall be 14 ± 1/32 inches long by 14 ±1/32 inches wide by ¼ ±1/32 inch thick.
Weight. The total weight of the pad shall be not greater than 2 pounds.
Physical Characteristics.
The pad shall show no evidence of deterioration when tested in accordance with the Thermal Stability Test cited below.
Thermal Stability Test. Sample pads shall be subjected to cycles steam autoclaving at 270o ± 5oF, dry and saturated. A total of 10 cycles, 30 minutes 30 seconds per cycle shall be used. After each cycles completed, pads shall be examined for signs of swelling, tackiness, cracking, warpage, delamination, or staining.
Workmanship. The surgical instrument pad shall be free of defects which detract from its appearance or may impair its serviceability, proper functioning, or intended use.
Unit. Each (EA). One pad, as specified, constitutes one unit.
