COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
SWAB, PROCTOSIGMOISCOPIC TIP, (Non-Sterile, 500’s)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers a proctosigmoiscopic swab suitable for use in sigmoidoscopic procedures. The swab shall conform to the salient characteristics listed below.
Salient characteristics:
Material.
Fibrous tuft. The tuft of the swab shall be fabricated from white, USP purified rayon fibers. In addition, the purified rayon fibers shall have a lead content that does not exceed 5 parts per million (ppm, when tested in accordance with the USP.
Stick. The stick shall be fabricated from white sulfate converting paper sized with metnyl cellulose and its moisture content shall be not greater than 6 percent by weight when tested in accordance with ASTM Test Method D2044-68.
The swab shall be provided clean and ready to use.
Construction. The swab shall consist of a stick component and a fibrous tuft rayon component. The paper material used to fabricate that stick shall be tightly rolled into a uniform cylinder. One end of the stick shall be tightly wrapped with a pear-shaped fibrous tuft rayon tip. Swab sticks shall be straight and free from fraying or stray filaments. The tip shall not unravel, looser or become detached when exposed to water or humid atmosphere. The swab shall be flexible and shall not break when bent through an arc of 145o ± 5o.
Dimensions. The swab shall have an overall length of 16 ± 1 inch (40.6 ± 2.5 cm). The diameter of the stick shall be 5/32 ± 1/32 inch (4.0 ± 0.79 mm). The maximum diameter of the tip shall be 15/32 ± 1/32 inch (11.0 ± 0.79 mm).
Workmanship. The swab shall be free from defects which detract from its appearance or impair its serviceability.
Unit. Package (PG). One package containing five sealed bags, 100 swab per bag, constitutes one unit. (500 swabs)
