Type IV- Wood or plastic 1/12 inch diameter plus 0.03 inch minus 0.03 inch minus 0.01 inch, (0.2 cm plus 0.7 cm minus 0.02 cm), 6 inches long + 4 inch (15.24 cm + to 0.63 cm), with absorbent fiber tip, sterile. The applicator shall be symmetrical throughout the length and the ends cut square and smooth. Wooden applicators shall be made of tough, flexible, well seasoned, fungus-free wood, smoothly finished and having a moisture content of not less than 6 percent and not more than 12 percent. Plastic applicators shall be made of a suitable plastic material and shall have a sufficient flexibility to preclude breaking when bent to an angle of at least 80 degrees at the longitudinal midpoint of the applicator. One end of the applicator shall be securely tipped with cotton. The cotton shall be purified cotton, in conformance with the requirements of the United States Pharmacopies (USP) for purified cotton. The cotton shall be approximately 3/16 inch (0.48 cm) in diameter affixed to the applicator by us of nontoxic adhesive, capable of withstanding sterilization without affecting the intended use of the item. The adhesive shall inhibit mold growth. The applicator shall be capable of withstanding chemicals such as ether and acrylic monomers used in dental laboratories.
Type V- Wooden rod, 1/8 inch diameter plus 0.03 inch minus 0.01 inch (0.3 cm plus 0.07 cm minus 0.02 cm), 12 inches long + 4 inch (30.48 cm + 0.63 cm), plain without absorbent tip, nonsterile. Applicators shall be made from a tough, flexible, well seasoned, fungus-free wood, smoothly finished having a moisture content of not less than 6 percent and not more than 12 percent.
