COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
CATHETER, URETHRAL, PLASTIC, DISPOSABLE ROUND TIP,
ROBINSON-NELATON TYPE
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Military Specification MIL-C-36583A dated 18 August 1976.
This commercial item description covers Robinson-Nelaton type urethral catheter suitable for use in catheterization procedures.
Salient characteristics:
General. The catheter shall be a sterile, disposable, plastic, urethral catheter, Robinson-Nelaton design, French size 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 or 18, suitable for introduction into the human bladder through the urethra for the withdrawal of urine.
Material. The catheter shall be fabricated from soft, pliable, clear or red opaque, thermo-sensitive medical grade plastic which shall not cause trauma or irritate body tissue. The material used shall meet the requirements for Class IV plastics, as stated in the current United States Pharmacopeia (USP). The lead content shall not exceed five (5) parts per million (ppm).
Characteristics. The catheter shall have a nominal overall length of 16 inches with a perfectly, round smooth tip, smooth circular shaft having a uniform diameter and integral funnel end for making easy connections. It shall be hollow behind the tip and have two (2) satin smooth eyes through the wall of the catheter tube that shall be staggered axially near the closed end and be diametrically opposed to each other. The eyes shall not overlap not be separated by less than 0.105 inch (0.266 cm) nor more than 0.290 inch (0.737 cm). Commercial tolerances shall apply.
Physical properties.
Breaking strength. The breaking strength of the catheters shall be as specified in table I.
