COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
CAUTERY, OPHTHALMIC, BATTERY-OPERATED, LOW TEMPERATURE
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers a compact, fully-sealed sterile, disposable eye cautery for control of small bleeding sources in minor surgery.
Salient characteristics:
Shall be fully sealed, sterile, disposable battery-powered cautery. The tip shall have an operating temperature of 1100o F (593o C) ± percent. The cautery shall have maximum dimensions of 7 inches overall length and ¾ inch diameter. Weight shall be 2-1/2 ounces ± ½ ounce. Case shall be fabricated of a suitable plastic: shall house one AA size alkaline battery (ANSI designation L401). Shall be furnished with an actuator button capable of immediate start and stop control and a tip overcover; actuator button shall be inoperable when tip overcover as in place. Cautery shall have a fine tip. The Cautery Fine Tip shall be approximately 5/8 inch (1.58 cm). Combined length of tip and shaft shall not exceed 1-1/2 inches. Not more than 6 months shall have elapsed from the date of manufacture of the cautery to the time of delivery to the Government Batteries shall not be older than 6 months at time of delivery.
Tests.
Tests to show the condition of fresh batteries shall be started within 30 days after shipment by the battery manufacturer. Manufacturer shall select the applicable test from American National Standard Specifications for Dry Cells and Batteries (ANSI C18.1-1979). The test used shall be the one that most nearly duplicates the power output of the battery in actual use.
Workmanship. Cauteries shall be free from defects which detract from its appearance or impair its serviceability.
Unit. Each (EA). One package containing cauteries, individually packaged sterile, constitutes one unit.
Contractor certification. The contractor shall certify that the product offered meets the salient characteristics of this description and conforms to the producers’ own drawings, specifications, standards, and quality assurance practices. The Government reserves the right to require proof of such conformance prior to first delivery and thereafter as may be otherwise provided for under the provisions of the contract.
