COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
NEEDLE, SUTURE, VETERINARY, SURGEONS
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers one suture needle for veterinary surgical procedures.
Salient characteristics:
The needle shall be a non-sterile, 3/8 circle, Surgeons’ regular eye cutting edge needle, for suturing and spaying procedures in horses during veterinary surgical procedures. The length of the needle before bending shall be 4 ± 1/8 inch and the wire size shall be 0.072 ± 0.002 inch.
The needle shall be fabricated from AISI type 420 or 440A corrosion-resisting steel. The needle shall have a Rockwell hardness of 050-055, following proper stress relief and passivation.
There shall be no evidence of corrosion in the eye, shaft or tip when subjected to the boil test and copper sulfate test as specified in Federal Specification GG-I-526.
The needle shall have a smooth, polished finish, free from burrs, feathered edges, hooks, and slivers.
There shall be no evidence of cracks, uneven bends, or fractures when tested in accordance with ASTM E-290-81.
The needle shall be reusable and capable of repeated sterilization by cold liquid processes or gas procedures.
Workmanship. The suture needle shall be free from defects which detract from its appearance or impair its serviceability.
Unit. Package (PG). One package, containing twelve (12), needles, as specified, constitutes one unit.
Quality Assurance Provisions.
Responsibility for inspection. Unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order, the contractor is responsible for the performance of all inspection requirements as specified herein. Except as otherwise specified in the contact or purchase order, the contractor may use his own or any facilities suitable for
