TUBE, STOMACH, SURGICAL, Silicone, Salem, Disposable
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers sterile, disposable, radiopaque, double-lumen stomach tubes of the Salem design, suitable for long term enteral feeding and aspiration of the stomach contents.
Salient characteristics:
General. The salem, surgical, stomach tube shall be suitable for long term enteral feeding and aspiration of the stomach contents.
Characteristics. The sterile, disposable double-lumen. Salem, surgical stomach tube shall have a radiopaque line running lengthwise within its wall. The stomach tube shall have a length of 48 inches. The stomach tube shall be 16 Fr. The stomach tube shall be rounded and closed at the distal end.
There shall be ten oval eyes at the distal end. The ten oval eyes shall be equally distributed on each side of the radiopaque stripe. Another oval eye shall bisect the radiopaque stripe not less than 2 inches from the distal end.
The proximal end shall have a permanently attached connector to the two lumens of the tube. Within the wall of the main lumen there shall be a secondary lumen. The main lumen shall function as a suction drainage lumen. The secondary lumen shall serve as an air vent and can also be used for irrigation. The proximal end of the stomach tube shall be flared to accommodate a removable universal size connector. This onnector shall be provided with the stomach tube. A flanged suction lumen adapter, with cap, shall be provided for the main lumen. The lumen adapter shall facilitate connection to catheter tip syringes. A lumen cap shall be provided for the secondary lumen. The stomach tube shall be marked at 18, 22, 26, and 30 inches from the distal end of the tube.
Radiopacity. Select at least two tubes from each lot and radiograph as follows.
a) Superimpose 240 ± 10 mm of USP paraffin over the tubes.
b) use a standard make of cassette with screens, films and processing solutions.
c) Expose at a setting of 85 kV, 10mAs and from a distance of 640 ± 10mm.
The tubes shall have a stripe that shows as a definite shadow when tested.
Sterility. Each stomach tube shall be sterile when tested in accordance with USP.
Safety. The stomach tubes shall be tested for safety in accordance with the USP for transfusion and infusion assembles.
