Each splint shall be loosely folded in half lengthwise in such a manner that the fold is not creased. A cushioning medium such as plastic air bubbles or other suitable materials may be placed between the folds of the splint to prevent the folded edge from being creased. With the zipper in the closed position, the folded splint shall be inserted into the immediate container which shall be an air-tight bag fabricated of polyethylene having a minimum thickness of 0.002 inch. The bag shall be heat sealed after excess air has been evacuated.
Instructions for use shall be permanently marked on the immediate container. in addition, the following statement shall be located below the instructions for use in 3/16 minimum capital letters:
“CAUTION – USE IN AIRCRAFT REQUIRES MONITORING THE SPLINT PRESSURE TO PREVENT NEUROVASCULAR INJURY. LIMIT INFLATION PRESSURE TO ADEQUATE FRACTURE SUPPORT ONLY.”
The following information shall be printed in 1/8 inch minimum letters:
“ The aneroid pressure gage of a standard sphygmomanometer should be available for monitoring the splint pressure during ascent and descent. Splints air transported should be inflated to provide adequate support of the fractured limb (below 50 mm Hg). Over-inflation is to be specifically avoided.”
As an alternate, the above markings shall be legibly printed on a separate sheet of papert which shall be inserted in the immediate container in such a manner as to permit ready identification.
Leakage Test. The splint shall be tested for leakage by closing the zipper inflating the splint to a pressure of 60 mm Hg, closing the valve and immersing in water. There shall be no air bubble escape from the immersed splint.
Reference specification. Where Military or Federal Specification, ASTM Standards or Drawings are referenced herein, the issue of that specification standard or drawing in effect on the date of solicitation shall be used to determine compliance with the stated requirements.
Workmanship. The splint shall be free from defects which detract from its appearance or impair its serviceability.
Unit. Each (EA). One splint, as specified, constitutes one unit.
