The type III cannula shall be in accordance with Figure 3. The proximal end of the type III cannula shall be tapered tip which makes a secure connection with 7/32 i.d. inch rubber hose. As an alternate, the cannula may be provided with a tip adapter which makes a secure connection with 7/32 i.d. inch rubber hose.
Material. The cannula and tip of the type I (Abraham) cannula shall be manufactured from copper and plated with nickel. The hub of the type I cannula shakll be manufactured from a suitable brass and plated with chromium over nickel. The type II and type III cannulae shall be manufactured from Class 3, Type 304 or Type 316 austenitic corrosion-resistant steel of the composition given in American Society of Testing and Material (ASTM) Standard F899.
Leakage. The type III cannula shall be tested for leakage as follows: The distal end of the lumen shall be sealed. The adapter, if present, shall be attached and the cannula filled with water. The water shall be pressurized to 45 pounds per square inch (psi) and maintained at 45 psi for 5 minutes. There shall be no leakage from any part of the cannula or from the adapter.
Corrosion. Type I cannula shall be tested for resistance to salt spray in accordance with Federal Specification GG-I-526. Type II and Type III cannulae shall be tested for resistance to boil in accordance with Federal Specification GG-I-526. The cannulae shall show no evidence of corrosion when tested as specified.
Luer Lock hub (Type IV only). The luer lock hub cavity and flange shall meet the dimensional and performance requirements of American National Standards Institute/Health Industry Manufacturers Association (ANSI/HIMA) Standard MD.70.1. The hub cavity shall be plated to the entrance of the lumen.
Markings. Cannulae shall bear the manufacturer’s name of registered trademark. Cannulas of foreign manufacture shall bear the name of the country of manufacture. The Type II and Type III cannulae shall bear the word “Stainless”.
Workmanship. The workmanship of the cannulae shall be first class throughout. There shall be no metal chips or foreign matter on the exterior nor in the lumen of the cannulae. The plating of the type I cannula shall be uniform and free from cracks or peeling. There shall be no defects which impair the serviceability appearance, or life of the cannulae.
Product Quality Level.
Visual and dimensional examination. Shall be examined to verify that design, construction and workmanship are in accordance with applicable requirements.
