COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
KNIFE-CURETTE, EAR (Sheehy-House)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers knife-curettes of the Sheehy-House design for use during middle ear surgical procedures.
Salient characteristics:
General. The knife-curettes shall be of the Sheehy-House design suitable for use in surgical procedures of the middle ear. The knife-curettes shall be either the small weapon or large weapon design.
Materials. The knife-curettes shall be fabricated of Class 4 martensitic stainless steel shown in Table 2 of ASTM E899. After proper heat treating, the finished Rockwell hardness shall be C-50 to C-54. The knife-curettes shall have a satin or matte finish. As a final finishing operation. The knife-curettes shall be properly passivated. The finished instrument shall comply with the hardness and corrosion resistance requirements of Federal Specification GG-I-526.
Characteristics. The knife-curettes shall have an overall length of 6-5/8 inches. The distal tip shall have an oval-shaped knife positioned 45 degrees from the shaft. The centerline of the handle and shaft shall be in line with the plane of the knife face. The handle shall be 3-5/8 inches long and 7/32 inches in diameter. The handle shall be 6 to 8 longitudinal grooves. The shank shall be 3 inches long, tapering from the handle to the distal end. The instruments shall be in accordance with Figure 1.
Workmanship. The curette knives shall be free from defects which detract from their appearance or impair their serviceability.
