COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
CANNULA, EAR (House, Suction-Irrigator)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers House ear suction-irrigator cannulas used for middle ear surgical procedures.
Salient characteristics:
General. The cannula shall have a suction tube with a finger tip control, an irrigator tube, and two obturators (one for each tube), for use in middle ear surgical procedures.
Material. The cannula shall be fabricated from Class 3 austenitic corrosion-resistant steel in accordance with ASTM F899.
Hardness. The cannula shall have a Rockwell hardness of B85 minimum.
Style and design. The cannula shall be of the House suction-irrigator design. The suction lumen shall have a finger tip control on the shaft 2.8 ± 0.3 cm from the proximal end. The by-pass hole on the finger device shall have the same nominal cross-sectional area as the inside of the suction lumen shaft. At the proximal end of each cannula, there shall be an enlarged section suitable for connection of tubing. The finger device and both tubing connectors shall be permanently attached to the cannula shaft. The irrigation lumen shall be permanently attached to the suction cannula. The style and dimensions shall be in accordance with Figure 1. The cannula shall be free from any sharp edges or cracks.
Obturator. When inserted into the lumen, the obturator shall be long enough to pass completely through the cannula and tubing connector. The proximal end of the obturator shall provide a non-slip grip, or shall be formed into a loop.
Passivation. The cannula shall be properly passivated.
