MALLET, NASAL, COPPER, Small
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers a small copper, nasal, bone mallet suitable for use in nasal surgery.
Salient characteristics:
General. Shall be a small nasal bone mallet suitable for use during nasal surgery.
Material. The mallet head shall be fabricated from copper rod or shall be a stainless steel jacket with a copper insert or as a minimum shall have a copper striking surface. The mallet head shall not be plated. The mallet shaft shall be fabricated from 410 or 420 stainless steel in accordance with ASTM F899. Should 410 or 420 stainless steel be used, the steel shall have a Rockwell hardness of C45 to C52. The handle shall be fabricated from Class 3 austenitic stainless steel in accordance with ASTM F899. The handle shall have a minimum Rockwell hardness B75. The mallet shaft and handle shall be tested for Rockwell hardness in accordance with ASTM E18.
Characteristics. The nasal mallet shall have a total weight of approximately 4 ounces. The nasal mallet shall have an overall length of 6.5 inches plus or minus 0.5 inch provided the design achieves an ideal balance. The mallet head shall have a diameter of 0.75 inch plus or minus 0.063 inch. The handle design shall provide a secure grip. The handles may be fluted or knurled.
Marking. The mallet shall be marked with the name or registered trademark of the contractor. The word “stainless” shall be marked on the shaft. If the mallet is of foreign manufacture, the mallet shall be marked with the country of origin.
