COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
NAIL, BONE, SCHNEIDER, DOUBLE POINT
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers bone nails, of the Schneider design, suitable for femoral fixation and intramedullary surgical procedures.
Salient characteristics:
Characteristics. Bone nails shall be in accordance with ASTM F455 for Type I intramedullary nails. Both ends of nails shall be self-broaching and threaded.
Material. Bone nails shall be fabricated from material conforming to the composition specified in ASTM F138, Grade 2. Grain size of the raw material shall be five or finer.
Surface preparation. Description of surface characteristics and methods of surface preparation shall be in accordance with ASTM F86.
Finish. The completed bone shall have a bright, smooth, mirror finish, properly passivated.
Corrosion properties. Bone nails shall show no evidence of corrosion when subjected to the following tests:
Intergranular corrosion. The intergranular corrosion susceptibility test specified in ASTMF138.
Saline. Bone nails shall be completely immersed into Normal Saline Solution (USP), and while immersed, placed into an oven at a temperature 37o ± 1oC for a period of seven days, removed from the oven and examined for corrosion while still immersed.
