WIRE SNARE, NO. 24 STUBS
WIRE GAGE, CARBON STEEL
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers a snare wire used with tonsil snares of the Tyding design.
Salient characteristics:
General. Shall be a wire snare used to surgically remove tonsils when assembled to tonsil snares of the Tyding design.
Materials. The wire snare shall be manufactured from cold drawn carbon steel in accordance with the chemical composition and mechanical requirements of ASTM A228 or austenitic corrosion-resistant steel of the chemical composition specified in ASTM F899.
Characteristics. The wire shall be No. 24 Stubs iron wire gage with a diameter of 0.0220 ± 0.0003 inch. As an alternate, the wire shall be 0.55 ± 0.01 mm (0.0217 ± 0.0004 inches) when the wire is labeled in SI units. The wire shall be in accordance with Figure I.
Physical Properties.
Tensile Strength. Carbon steel wire shall have a tensile strength of 345,000 to 382,000 pounds per square inch (psi) when tested as specified herein.
Austenitic corrosion-resistant wire shall have a tensile strength of 290,000 psi minimum when tested as specified herein.
Uniformity and finish. The finished wire snare shall be uniform in diameter and temper and shall have a smooth, bright finish, free from cracks, pits, die marks, scale and corrosion.
Workmanship. The wire snare shall be free from defects which detract from its appearance or impair its serviceability.
