COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
SCREW, BONE (82° COUNTERSUNK HEAD)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers 82° countersunk head bone pins with pilot points suitable for implanting bones.
Salient characteristics:
Characteristics. Bone screw shall be in accordance with Figure 2 of ASTM F543. Shall be No.6M bone thread, 32 threads per inch. The bone screw shall be of the double-fluted, self-tapping design, as shown in ASTM F544 for medical screws possessing cruciate oval head. The tapping point shall be as shown in ASTM F544 for the double-flute design. Radius of the flutes shall be 0.125 ± .015 inches.
Material. Bone screw shall be fabricated from cold drawn wire conforming to the composition specified in ASTM F138, Grade 2.
Surface preparation. Description of surface characteristics and methods of surface preparation shall be in accordance with ASTM F86.
Finish. The completed bone screw shall have a mirror finish, properly passivated.
Corrosion properties. Bone screws shall show no evidence of corrosion when subjected to the following tests:
Intergranular corrosion. The intergranular corrosion susceptibility test specified in ASTM F138.
Saline. Bone screws shall be completely immersed into Normal Saline Solution (USP), and while immersed, placed into an oven at a temperature of 37o ± 1oC for a period of seven days, removed from the oven and examined for corrosion while still immersed.
