COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
SPECULUM, SEPTUM (Cottle)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use
of this Commercial Item Description.
This commercial item description covers Cottle septum speculum for use in exposing the nasal canals.
Salient characteristics.
General. Shall be a septum speculum of the Cottle design for use in exposing the nasal canals.
Material. Except for the screws and pins, the speculum shall be fabricated from Class 4 martensitic corrosion-resisting steel. The screws and pins shall be fabricated from either autenitic corrosion-resisting Type 303 steel or martensitic corrosion-resisting steel. The chemical composition of the steel shall be in accordance with ASTM F899 for the class and type used.
Hardness. The speculum shall have a Rockwell hardness of C-40 to C-45 when tested for hardness in accordance with ASTM E18 or ASTM E140.
Style and design. The speculum shall be a nasal speculum with a screw pivot and thin 2 inch blades. Removal of the screw shall facilitate separation of the blades for repair and cleaning. The speculum shall be capable of easy opening when normal hand pressure is applied and shall close freely without binding or setting when the pressure is released. The style and dimensions shall be in accordance with Figure 1.
Finish. The finish shall be satin and mirror in accordance with Federal Specification GG-I-526.
Passivation. The speculum shall be properly passivated.
