CARRIER, SUTURE WIRE (RUSH)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers Rush suture wire carriers for use in placing wire suture during orthopedic surgical procedure.
Salient characteristics:
General. The rush suture carriers shall be designed to place wire sutures around comminuted fractures during orthopedic surgical procedures. This specification covers suture wire carriers with loop diameters of 15/16, 1-1/4 and 2 inches.
Material. The Rush wire carrier shall be fabricated from class 5 martensitic stainless steel in accordance with ASTM F899. The Rockwell hardness shall be C-38 to C-45 when tested in accordance with ASTM E18. The handle shall be fabricated from aluminum or other suitable metal.
Characteristics. The Rush wire carrier shall have a loop at the distal end for reaching around the bone. There shall be a hole at the distal end to allow threading of the suture wire. The rush wire carrier shall meet the dimensional requirements indicated in Figure 1. The handle design shall provide a secure grip. The entire carrier shall be capable of repetitive steam sterilization at temperatures up to 275°F.
Corrosion testing. The Rush wire carrier shall meet the copper sulfate and boil test requirements as specified in Federal Specification GG-I-526.
Identification marking. The Rush wire carrier shall bear the name or registered trademark of the manufacturer and the word “stainless”. In addition, instruments of foreign manufacture shall bear the name of the country of manufacture.
Passivation. Material used in the fabrication of the mallet shall be passivated, if required.
