SUTURE, ABSORBABLE, SURGICAL
(Polyglycolic Acid)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers absorbable surgical sutures fabricated of polyglycolic acid and suitable for use in various surgical procedures.
Salient characteristics:
Sutures shall be fabricated from braided, undyed filaments of polyglycolic acid. Sutures which are armed shall be swaged to eyeless needles and meet the requirements of the USP for security of needle attachment. Size and tensile strength shall also be in accordance with the USP.
Needles shall be fabricated from type 420 or 440 corrosion-resistant steel in accordance with ASTM F899. Needles shall be properly stress-relieved and passivated. Needles shall meet the requirements of ASTM E290 for ductility.
Sutures and needles shall have dimensions as specified in Table I.
