COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
SPLINT, LEG, (Traction)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers a leg traction splint, Hare style, for use in immobilizing long bone fractures of the lower extremity of an adult.
Salient characteristics.
Shall be a leg traction splint suitable for use in immobilizing a fractured leg. Splint shall consist of an adjustable leg support frame, an ishial support, a positive traction device, a heel stand, an ankle, strap, and leg support straps.
The leg support frame shall consist of two telescoping sections connected at the proximal (thigh) end by the ishial support, and at the distal (ankle) end by the positive traction device. Each telescoping section shall consist of an upper portion fabricated of aluminum tubing 5/8 inch in diameter by 21.5 inches long, and a lower portion fabricated of 3/8 inch diameter by 28.4 inches long aluminum rod which slides freely within the upper portion to control the extended length of the splint. The upper and lower portions of each section shall be held at the desired length by a locking device consisting of a threaded collet permanently attached to the upper portion, and a collet sleeve that shall thread onto the collet, engaging the collet sleeve and collet onto the lower portion. Collet and collet sleeve shall be fabricated of 1018 cold rolled steel.
The ishial support shall be fabricated from 1/2 inch diameter 6061-T6 aluminum rod contoured with various compound angles to form a 7-1/4 inch width between the telescoping sections at the proximal end of the splint. The rod shall be covered with polyurethane foam ishial pad, 1-5/8 inches in diameter by 7-1/2 inches long, to prevent undue pressure at the ishium which could cause restriction of blood flow. The ishial pad shall have sufficient memory to return to its original shape when not in use.
