COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
RONGEUR (Kerrison, 7-1/2 inch, 40* Upbite)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers a Kerrison design rongeur suitable for use in laminectomy surgery.
Salient characteristics:
General. The rongeur shall be a laminectory rongeur, of the Kerrison design with a 7-1/2 inch nominal shaft length. The cutting mechanism shall be 3.0 or 5.0 mm half oval (See Note) 40° upbite jaws. The jaws shall have a bone chip ejector. The rongeur shall have a spring action pistol-grip handle. The handles shall be serrated and have a thumb guard for positive grip. The rongeur shall be furnished in the following sizes and their respective bite dimensions:

Materials. The material of the rongeur shall be Class 4 martensitic corrosion-resistant steel in accordance with ASTM Designation F899.
Hardness. The rongeur shall have a Rockwell Hardness C Scale (HRC) 48 to 55. The hardness shall be tested in accordance with ASTM Designation E18 or ASTM Designations E92 and E140.
Style, design and dimensions. The rongeur shall be in accordance with Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing No. 24570 for style, design and dimensions.
Passivation. The rongeur shall be properly passivated.
Finish. The finish of the rongeur shall be mirror, satin, or matte.
