COMMERICAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
SYRINGE, IRRIGATING, SURGICAL, Barrel and Plunger Type
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers an irrigating syringe suitable for irrigating catheters, incubating tubes, wound irrigation, irrigation of wet dressings, gastric lavage and sampling and aspiration procedures.
Salient characteristics:
General. The syringe shall be a plastic, disposable, barrel and plunger type, irrigating syringe with catheter tip, intended for single use. The syringe shall be nontoxic and nonpyrogenic in accordance with the U.S.P.
Material. Barrel shall be fabricated of rigid, transparent, virgin polypropylene which meets the requirements of the USP for Class III plastics. The plunger shall be fabricated from polypropylene meeting USP requirements for Class 111 plastics. Plunger tip shall be fabricated of pharmaceutical grade rubber or neoprene plastics or Elastomeric Closures. Plunger tip material shall be nonblooming, nonleaching, nontoxic, age-resistant, and inert. Interior surface of the barrel shall be film coated with an inert~ nontoxic, pharmaceutical grade silicone lubricant.
Style and design. The syringe shall be a 140 ml capacity syringe and consist of a barrel, plunger, tip protector, and an immediate container designed to dispense the syringe by sterile technique. The barrel shall have a catheter tip suitably mated concentrically to the barrel. The tip shall be 1-3/16 to 1-5/8 inches long and 1/4 inch, nominal, O.D. at the orifice. Barrel shall have a finger grip with flanges shaped to prevent rolling of the syringe when placed upon a horizontal surface. Barrel shall be double scaled; one scale for ml graduations and one scale for ounce graduations. Markings shall be permanent, smear-resistant, and accurate to within 5 percent of the indicated capacity. Markings shall consist of:
Main graduations indicated each 10 ml (or cc) and 1/2 oz, and numbered graduations at each 10 ml (or cc) and each ounce. Sub graduations indicated each 5 ml and 1/4 oz.
