COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
FORCEPS, UTERINE ELEVATING, SOMER
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description as a replacement for Military Specification MIL-F-42057, which is cancelled.
This commercial item description covers a Somer uterine elevating forceps suitable for use in gynecological surgery.
Salient characteristics:
General. The instrument shall be a uterine elevating forceps of the Somer design with a nominal overall length of 9 inches. The blades shall be angled and curved for use in gynecological procedures. The faces of the blades shall have serrations around the opening which are consistent in depth.
Materials. Material of the forceps shall be Class 4 corrosion-resistant steel in accordance with ASTM Designation F899.
Hardness. The forceps shall have a Rockwell Hardness C scale (HRC) of 42 to 50 when tested in accordance with ASTM Designation E18 or E92 whichever is applicable. Conversion of hardness values shall be in accordance with ASTM Designation E140.
Style, design and dimensions. The handles shall be securely fastened together at their pivot point. The action of the forceps shall be easy, without drag or binding. The forceps shall be in accordance with Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing No. 23364 for style, design and dimensions.
Finish. The forceps shall have a satin or matte finish. The matte finish shall exhibit a uniform non-directional surface texture equivalent to that produced by lightly blasting the prepared surface with fine abrasives under pressure.
Passivation. The forceps shall be properly passivated.
Corrosion resistance. The forceps shall show no evidence of corrosion or plating of copper when tested in accordance with ASTM Designation F1089.
