COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
FORCEPS, GOITER, LAHEY, 6 Inch
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description as a replacement for Military Specification MIL-F-36732 which is cancelled.
This commercial item description covers one type of Goiter forceps suitable for use in surgical procedures.
Salient characteristics:
General. The instrument shall have 3 X 3 teeth and shall be designed to grip firmly without puncturing rubber dam or the thyroid gland. When tested as specified under Quality Assurance Provisions (QAP), the teeth shall grip the test material firmly and securely without puncturing or tearing it. The forceps shall not be capable of releasing the test material when the jaws are clamped in the tightest ratchet position. Also, the teeth points shall not butt against each other when tested as specified under QAP.
Material. Material of the forceps shall be Class 4 corrosion resistant steel in accordance with ASTM F899.
Hardness. The forceps shall have a Rockwell Hardness C scale (HRC) of 40 to 47, when tested in accordance with ASTM E18 or E92 whichever is applicable, except for the screw or pin. As an alternate, the hardness may be (HRC) 48 TO 53 except for the screw or pin. Conversion of hardness values shall be in accordance with ASTM E140.
Style, design and dimensions. The forceps shall be in accordance with Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing No. 20483 for style, design and dimensions.
Finish. The forceps shall have a mirror, satin or matte finish. The matte finish shall exhibit a uniform nondirectional surface texture equivalent to that produced by lightly blasting the prepared surface with fine abrasives under pressure.
