Sampling for tests. Sampling for tests shall be conducted in accordance with MIL-STD-105 and as specified herein. The inspection level shall be S-2. Dimensional testing shall be at a 2.5% AQL, hardness testing at a 1/5%. Corrosion and performance testing shall be at a 1.0% AQL. The unit of product for tests purposes shall be one suture needle holder.
Holder performance. Clamp a 0.005 ± 0.001 inch o.d. cotton or silk suture (common thread may be substituted if dimensional and tensile strength requirements are met) in the jaws and subject the suture to a 0.45 pound force (minimum) for 30 seconds minimum. Any slippage of the suture in the jaws shall constitute a test failure. Clamp a 0.020 +/- 0.004 inch o.d. suture needle (or, as an alternate a steel wire of the same dimensions) in the needle holder jaws. The needle shall be clamped perpendicular to the axis of the needle holder such that a portion of the needle is exposed on both sides of the jaws. Apply one pound force such that the force is distributed evenly on the metal protruding on either side of the jaws. Any slippage of the needle in the jaws resulting in a displacement of the needle (i.e. side to side twist is excluded) shall be a test failure.
Contractor certification. The contractor shall certify that the product offered meets the salient characteristics of this description and conforms to the producers’ own drawings, specifications, standards, and quality assurance practices. The Government reserves the right to require proof of such conformance prior to first delivery and thereafter as may be otherwise provided for under the provisions of the contract.
Metric products. Products manufactured to metric dimensions will be considered on an equal basis with those manufactured using inch-pound units, providing they fall within the tolerance specified using conversion tables contained in the latest revision of Federal Standard 376, and all other requirements of this document are met.
If a product is manufactured to metric dimensions and those dimensions exceed the tolerances specified in the inch/pound units, a request should be made to the contracting officer to determine if the product is acceptable.
