COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
SAW, FINGER RING
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description as a replacement for Military Specification MIL-S-36635 which is cancelled.
This Commercial Item Description covers a manually operable saw suitable for cutting metal finger rings.
Salient characteristics:
Material. The blade of the saw shall be fabricated from unplated high carbon steel. The bearing washer and hub shall be fabricated from martensitic corrosion-resisting steel (the martensitic corrosion-resisting steel alloy for hub component shall have a manganese content not exceeding 1.80 percent). The handle, tip, and lever shall be fabricated from austenitic corrosion-resisting steel, or martensitic steel, or chromium plated over nickel plated copper alloy. The thumbpiece shall be fabricated from a corrosion-resisting steel or from a combination of molded reinforced nylon and austenitic corrosion-resisting steel. As an alternate, the handle shall be fabricated from molded reinforced nylon. All other fastening from austenitic or martensitic corrosion-resisting steel. All corrosion-resisting steel shall be in accordance with ASTM F899.
Hardness. The Rockwell hardness of the blade shall be 73 to 79 on the 30-N scale. The Rockwell hardness of the hub and washer shall be in C scale (HRC) of 38 to 48 when fabricated from martensitic steel, and in B scale 75-95 when fabricated from austenitic steel when tested in accordance with ASTM E18 or E92 whichever is applicable. Conversion of hardness values shall be in accordance with ASTM E140.
