Commercial Item Description
Prosthetic Socks
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description.
Salient Characteristics. Prosthetic socks (stump socks) shall be knitted in a circular (tubular) fashion, with a smooth graduation of diameter (or width) from toe to top. The socks shall possess all the characteristics that contribute to comfort and durability having adequate elasticity and allowable shrinkage. Within the limits of suppliers equipment, the socks shall be manufactured free of hard ends, knots, square pockets and open stitches.
Size of Sock. Except for Type IV, size of socks shall be determined by laying socks flat for length, for width at the top and the width at approximately two (2) inches from the end of the toe, (or approximately 1/2 of the toe width from per each additional size, and toe width by increments of 1/2” to 2” per size depending on sock length, and length 10-34” are increased by 2” increments. Arm sock sizes 0 – 1 are increased by 1-1/2” increment in width at the top, and 1/2” increment in toe width. In both sizes, lengths 6-22” are increased by 2” increments. VA size are standard among all manufacturers and offers are solicited per VA size.
Type I – Cotton socks shall be domestic spun yarn carded or carded and combed, 100% cotton with 1/2% tolerance. To the greatest degree possible, socks shall have adequate stretch and/or elasticity and allowable shrinkage (maximum 10% in length and 5% in width) when laundered in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
Type II – Virgin wool socks shall be 100% wool with 1/2% tolerance. Socks shall be of strands of 64’s, or finer quality fibers. Socks shall be knitted using 3, 4, 5, 6, and/or 7 strands with yarn sizes not larger than 16 nor smaller than 18 (worsted method) or other to provide comparable weight or thickness. To the greatest degree possible, socks shall have adequate stretch and/or elasticity and allowable shrinkage (maximum 10% in length and 5% in width) when laundered in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
Type III – Blend socks to be of virgin wool and
synthetic fibers. Socks shall be knitted using 3, 4, 5, 6, and/or 7 strands
with yarn sizes not larger than 16 nor smaller than 18, (worsted method) or
other to provide comparable weight or thickness. To the greatest degree
possible, socks shall have adequate stretch and/or elasticity and allowable
shrinkage (maximum 5% in length and 5% in width) when laundered in accordance
with manufacturer’s instructions.
Type IV – Orlon Acrylic/Lycra Spandex socks are to be white, fleeced inside and out, and suitable for immediate post-operative use. Fiber composition shall be 95% ± 2% acrylic and 5% ± 2% spandex.
Certification. The contractor shall certify that the product offered meets the salient characteristics of this description, and that the product conforms to the producer’s own drawings, specifications, standards, and quality assurance practices, and is the same product sold in the commercial marketplace. The Government reserves the right to require proof of such conformance prior to first delivery and thereafter as may be otherwise provided for under the provisions of the contract.
