COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
CRUTCH (Adjustable, Wood)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in lieu of Military Specification MIL-C-37233 and Federal Specification GG-C-716, which is cancelled.
This commercial item description describes an adjustable wooden crutch used as an aid in ambulation.
Salient characteristics. Crutch, Adjustable,. Wood, axillary type, shall be provided in Type I (adult), me II (youth) and Type III (child). The crutches shall be furnished without axillary cushion, handgrips or tip and shall consist of the arm or supporting piece, two bows, hand piece, foot piece, and three stove bolts fitted with washers and winged nuts. The crutches shall be in accordance with DPSC Drawing 1781 for Type I and DPSC Drawing 24368 for Type II and Type III. The complete crutch shall be capable of adjustment in length from 47-1/4 inches to 59-1/2 inches plus or minus 1 inch (120 cm to 151 cm plus or minus 2.54) for Type I, 36 inches to 48 inches (91 cm to 122 cm) for Type II, and 30 inches to 38 inches (76 cm to 97 cm) for me III. Length adjustment shall be measured from the bottom of the foot piece to the top middle of the arm piece. The sum of the allowed tolerances shall not increase or decrease the overall-minimum or maximum length for each type by more than 1/8 inch (.125 cm). The wooden parts shall be thoroughly seasoned solid straight grained or laminated (Type I only) hardwood. For Type II and III laminated parallel wood grain construction may be used for the crutch bows. Wooden parts for all types shall have a protective coat of a good grade, clean transparent spar varnish or lacquer finish which shall be properly applied and present a uniform hard, smooth surface. Crutches shall be free of knots, splits, decay, splinters, sharp edges or corners and sharp particles.
The commercial stove bolts shown on drawing with the same size washers shall be used under a self-locking wing nut or as an alternate a standard wing nut shall be provided with a shakeproof dished-typed washer with toothed periphery (shakeproof #4810-09-01 or equal). Wing nuts shall have large wings protruding vertically above the wing nut body, as shown on drawings, to provide patient ease in crutch length adjustment.
