The armpiece for Type I shall be 1-1/2 inches (plus or minus 1/4 inch) (4 cm plus or minus .250 cm) in thickness (depth) and 7-3/4 inches (plus or minus 1/8 inch) (20 cm plus or minus .125 cm) in length. The armpiece width dimensions for Type I crutch shall be as shown or drawing 1781 or as an alternate, width shall be 13/16 inches (plus 1/16 minus zero inch) (.812 cm plus or minus .062 cm).
The handpiece shall be cylindrical in shape tapering toward each end. A hole shall be drilled through the center from end to end with proper clearance for the securing stove bolt.
Strength test. The crutch shall be secured in a vertical position and a force of 300 pounds applied in a vertical downward direction at the center of the top surface of the armpiece. Remove this force and apply a vertical downward force of 150 pounds to the center of the handpiece. The crutch shall be secured or clamped for tests at any point or points not more than four inches below the top or above the bottom in such a manner that the bows will be completely unrestrained. The crutch shall withstand the above loads without breakage or any damage.
Workmanship. Crutches shall be free from cracks, knots, splinters, breaks, rough areas, protruding nails, poor or not finished, delamination, parts stuck together, dirt, grease and foreign material.
Unit. Pair (PR). One pair of crutches of the type specified, constitutes one unit.
Quality Assurance Provisions.
Responsibility for inspection. Unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order, the contractor is responsible for the performance of all inspection requirements as specified herein. Except as otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order, the contractor may use his own or any facilities suitable for the performance of the inspection requirements specified herein, unless disapproved by the government. The government reserves the right to perform any of the inspections set forth in the specification where such inspections are deemed necessary to assure supplies and services conform to prescribed requirements.
Records. Records of examinations and tests performed by or for the contractor shall be maintained by the contractor and made available to the Government, upon the Government’s request, at any time, or from time to time, during the performance of the contract and for a period of three years after delivery of the supplies to which such records relate.
