COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
MALLET, BONE SURGERY, STAINLESS STEEL
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers a stainless steel bone mallet for use in general orthopedic surgical procedures.
Salient characteristics:
General. Shall be a bone mallet for use during orthopedic surgery.
Material. The entire mallet shall be fabricated from class 3 austenitic stainless steel or class 6 ferritic stainless steel in accordance with ASTM F899. As an alternate, the mallet shall be fabricated from ferritic corrosion-resisting steel having the following composition: Carbon 0.10-0.17% Chromium 15.5-17.5%, Manganese 1.5% maximum and Molybdenum 0.2-0.3%. Should be the mallet be fabricated from class 6 ferritic stainless steel, the head shall have a Rockwell hardness of B-80 to B-100. The mallet head shall be tested for Rockwell hardness in accordance with ASTM E18.
Size. The one pound mallet shall have a head that weighs approximately one pound. The two pound mallet shall have a head that weighs approximately two pounds.
Characteristics. The mallet shall be in accordance with the dimensional requirements listed in Table I. The handle shall provide a non-slip and may be fluted or knurled.
