Marking. Each tube covered by this document shall be permanently and legibly marked with depth graduation at 18, 22, 26, & 30 inches from its distal end. Tolerance on these measurements shall be ± ¼ inch; chain tolerancing shall not be used. Tube shall also be permanently and legibly marked with the manufacturer’s name or registered trade mark and the French size.
Radiopacity. Each tube covered by this document shall have a radiopaque stripe spanning its entire length. This stripe shall have a minimum relative attenuation coefficient of 95 percent. Sample stomach tubes shall be tested for radiopacity in accordance with Method B of ASTM F640.
Pyrogens and biological tests. The tube shall meet the requirements of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) for pryogens and Type II biocompatibility tests.
Certificate of biocompatibility. A certificate of compliance, stipulating that offered items meet the biocompatibility test, shall be acceptable, provided that the contractor has supplied acceptable items to the Government within the past three years and that there has been no changes to material, formulation and the method of processing since actual testing was performed. The certificate shall include the date the testing was performed, the test method and results, the current contract number and National Stock Number (NSN), a statement certifying that material processing and formulation have not changed since the time that biocompatibility was performed and the signature and title of the person making the certification.
Workmanship. Each tube covered by this document shall be free from blooming, blisters, fish-eyes, frosting, pits, pimples, shorts, warpage, wrinkles, and any other defects which detract from its appearance or impair its serviceability.
Definitions of defects listed above shall be in accordance with ASTM D883, “Standard of Definitions of Terms Relating to Plastics”. Stomach tubes shall be supplied clean.
Unit. Package (PG). One package containing fifty individually packaged, clean stomach tubes of one French size as specified, constitutes one unit. Each tube shall be individually packaged in a transparent peel-open container.
