CATHETER AND NEEDLE UNIT, INTRAVENOUS
(16 Gage by 24 Inch Catheter, Radiopaque, Disposable)

This commercial item description covers a catheter-into-needle unit suitable for administering intravenous medication.
Salient characteristics:
This catheter-into-needle unit consists of a 16 gage by 24 inch catheter, a 14 gage by 2 ± 5/64 inch needle, a stylet, a needle bevel guard to prevent the needle from cutting the catheter, a needle protective cover and guard sleeve for aseptic placement of the catheter.
The catheter shall be clear, except for the radiopaque stripe(s) running along its entire length, and made of polyurethane. The hub shall be suitable rigid plastic color-coded yellow. The needle shall be Type 304 stainless steel in accordance with ASTM F899. The needle hub shall be made of aluminum. The stylet shall be stainless steel wire with an attached polyethylene knob which also functions as flow control plug. The needle bevel guard shall be made of polypropylene or polyethylene. The guard sleeve shall be clear, transparent 0.002 inch polyethylene. The needle protective cover shall also be made of polyethylene.
The catheter hub shall be in accordance with ANSI/HIMA MD70.1 and be permanently attached to the catheter. The inside dimensions of the aluminum needle hub shall conform to ANSI/HIMA MD70.1 requirements. The outside of the needle hub shall be designed to accommodate the collar of the guard sleeve. The stylet wire shall be 0.010 inch in diameter and when assembled in the catheter shall be about 1/4 inch shorter. The needle bevel guard shall be such that it will securely snap over the needle when it is withdrawn and prevent the sharp edges of the needle from cutting into the catheter when the latter is bent. The guard sleeve shall make a tight but removable fit to the needle hub, and shall be sealed at the proximal and shall maintain the sterility of the catheter until, it is removed. The needle protective cover shall be rigid, molded and make a bacteria tight seal with the needle hub.
