Style, design and dimension. The bone pins shall be a Type I (bayonet point) or Type II (trocar point) and have a triangular shank end. The bone pins shall be of the Steinmann design, suitable for implanting into the body for traction reduction of fractures. The bone pins shall be in accordance with the Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing No. 2202, for Type I bone pins and DPSC Drawing No. 1907 for Type II pins. Bone pins shall be furnished in accordance with the appropriate type, size, style, stock number and item identification.
Hardness. The bone pins shall have a Rockwell Hardness of C33 to C43 in accordance with ASTM E18 or E92 whichever is applicable.
Finish. The bone pins shall have a smooth, mirror finish, that is properly electropolished. Definitions of acceptable surface of characteristics shall be as described in ASTM F85.
Passivation. The bone pins shall be properly passivated after completion of all final finishing operations and shall be accomplished by the methods described in ASTM F86. Under no circumstances shall electropolishing be considered to satisfy this passivation requirement.
Corrosion. The bone pins shall not show evidence of corrosion when tested in accordance with ASTM E1089. As an alternate, the following saline test may be used: The bone pins shall be scrubbed w/soap and warm water, rinsed in hot water, followed by immersion into ethyl alcohol (95%) and dried. Bone pins shall be completely immersed into Nomad Saline Solution (USP) and while immersed, placed into an oven at a temperature of 37 ± 1 degrees centigrade for a period of 7 days, removed from the oven and examined for corrosion while still immersed.
Workmanship. The bone pins shall be free from cracks, slivers, scale, corrosion, tool marks, dull points and other defects which detract from their appearance or impair their serviceability.
Unit. Each (EA). One bone pin of the type, size, and style, as specified, constitutes one unit.
