COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
SCREWDRIVER, BONE-SCREW (Hexagonal Socket)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers a hexagonal socket screwdriver suitable for the insertion and removal of bone screws during orthopedic surgical procedures.
Salient characteristics:
General. The screwdriver shall be 8 inches long.
Material. The shaft and operative end of the screwdriver shall be fabricated from a suitable Class 4 martensitic stainless steel in accordance with ASTM Designation F899. The handle shall be fabricated from an autoclavable composite material. Set screw or pin shall be fabricated from a suitable corrosion resistant steel.
Hardness. The shaft and operative end shall have a Rockwell Hardness C Scale (HRC) of 48 when tested in accordance with ASTM E18 or E92, whichever is applicable. Conversion of hardness values shall be in accordance with ASTM E140.
Style and design. The operative end of the screwdriver shall be in accordance with ASTM Designation F116, Figure 4. The distance across the flats shall be 3.50 (+0m -0.05) mm. The length of exposed shaft shall be 130 mm nominal. The handle shall have a length of 100 mm, a width of 40 mm, and a thickness of 20 mm, all dimensions being nominal. The edges of the handle shall be contoured for a positive gripping surface. The handle shall be permanently secured to the shank by a set screw or pin.
Finish. The shaft and operative end shall have a satin or bright finish.
Passivation. All Class 3 or 4 material shall be properly passivated after completion of final finishing operations.
